Chapter 2: The Internet and Technology: Media at the Crossroads
This chapter was about the internet: how it started and where it is today. I found this chapter informative in that I have been using the internet for about half of my life now without ever really knowing where it came from or how it works, or grasping its vastness.
This chapter pointed out many facts about the internet with more depth that I felt I knew already: the digital divide, the difficulty of filtering inappropriate material on the web, accessibility of the internet, and security of public and private information. I find it interesting that it came from the most organized and hierarchical group in the country, the military, when it has evolved into something so decentralized. I also found the little section on how a compact disc works to be very interesting.
One quote from the chapter really stuck out to me, and that was the one that stated, "Expectations of search engines have skyrocketed. Whether it involves complex specialist knowledge or the completely trivial, there is a general belief that everything should be available instantly, at the click of a mouse." I feel that society today is becoming too dependent on the internet and although it has its positives, the internet will trap human beings in front of the screen and even farther away from the real world.
