Chapter 8: Newspapers: and the Rise of Modern Journalism
This chapter progressively describes the evolution of newspaper throughout history. It ranges from the Colonial/ Partisan Press, to the Penny Press Era, to Yellow Journalism, to modern day journalism. The chapter then focuses on analyzing methods of reporting as well as characteristics of contemporary news.
North American newspapers started off with Benjamin Harris, who published Publick Occurences, Both Foreign and Domestick in 1690. The book then outlines a line of reporters and heads of newspapers including Benjamin Franklin, John Peter Zenger, James Gordon Bennett, William Randolph Hearst, etc. I was interested in reading about how newspaper were written rather then their history. I never thought too much about informational versus interpretive news, or the objectivity or lack of in many newspapers.
I found the last section of the chapter to be thought provoking as well. With so many news papers being published, there is little room for anything new. Localized newspapers are also getting less popular, especially with the younger generation turning toward electronics as their main source or news coverage.
